Singer-songwriter and guitarist, Darrin James, also known locally for his gritty jazz-funk group, Disaster Relief, recently released his fourth album of original songs, titled "See RIght Through." Like James' earlier albums (as Darrin James Band), the new album showcases James' distinctive voice, thoughtful songwriting, and en eclectic musical soundscape that fuses rustic Americana with rock n' roll rawness, soulful improvisations, and electronic flourishes of textured synthesizers, drum machines, and psychedelic horns. James' current band line-up includes many of the same talented local musicians that make up Disaster Relief: Brennan Andes on bass, Rob Avsharian on drums, Tim Haldeman on sax and Keaton Royer on keyboards.
"The result goes down as easily as the longboats sliding down the Detroit River headed to Lake Erie...These are songs for people who are alive, joyously, doggedly, despite everything." - Michael Macy, Americana UK
Raw Honey is the long-term recording project of Maggie Hopp, an artist based out of Southeast Michigan. Her debut album, "Riverbed," produced by Fred Thomas and released on his Life Like label back in 2021, is an uncompromisingly open album for an artist who already approaches songwriting with an unnerving directness. Hopp parses through her emotional history to create an oddly clear rumination that’s resolute and vulnerable, but above all—tender, much like the child holding a child on the album’s cover.
Scotty Karate, has been playing his unique blend of punk, honkey-tonk and early rock n' roll since before alt-country was a thing. Often playing as a one-man-band, Scotty has built up a considerable following over the years, approaching something like cult status, and he even has an award winning beer named after him. Since 2021 Scotty has released two new records on James' Ravine Records label, "Always Honey" (2021) and "All the Way Out" (2024). Both albums showcase the range of Scotty's talents, from quiet solo balladry to raucous rockers, from psychedelic tall tales to honest, bittersweet reflections.
